Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2008, Volume 2, Issue 1,   Pages 81-88 doi: 10.1007/s11783-008-0016-x

Abstract: In order to explore the effect of different ecological zones and their above plants in the organic matter cycling of the whole tidal salt marsh, indicators such as total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), C/N ratio, ?C and ?N of surface, core sediments, and plants of tidal salt marshes in North Jiangsu Province are analyzed. Subsequently, distribution regularities of these measurement indicators are discussed, and the biogeochemistry processes between sediments and plants are also analyzed. Lastly, the organic matter sources of different ecologic zones in tidal salt marsh are evaluated, and the organic matter accumulations in different ecologic zones induced by their plants are also compared. These results indicate that TOC, TN, C/N ratio and C showed obvious zonal distribution. The organic matter sources are dominated by marine input in the silt flat, flat, and the transition zone between silt and flat, and are controlled by terrigenous input in s flat. plays an important role in the accumulation of organic matter in the whole tidal salt marshes ecosystem. In the study area, the annually increased TOC, organic matter and TN in the , and reed flats reach 6,451, 12,043 and 536 t, respectively. The amount of TOC, organic matter and TN accumulated in the flat is more than that in other ecological zones, which shows that the flat exert a non-replaceable effect on the material cycle and exchange in the whole tidal salt marshes ecosystem.

A holistic approach for evaluating ecological water allocation in the Yellow River Basin of China

YANG Zhifeng, CUI Baoshan, CHEN He

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2007, Volume 1, Issue 1,   Pages 99-106 doi: 10.1007/s11783-007-0019-z

Abstract: The characteristics and sustainable management of water resources on a basin scale require that they should be managed using a holistic approach. In this study, a holistic methodology called the holistic approach in a basin scale (HABS) is proposed to determine the ecological water requirements of a whole basin. There are three principles in HABS. First, ecological water requirements in a basin scale indicate not only the coupling of hydrological and ecological systems, but also the exchange of matter and energy between each ecological type through all kinds of physical geography processes. Second, ecological water requirements can be divided into different types according to their functions, and water requirements of different types are compatible. Third, ecological water requirements are related to a multiple system including water quality, water quantity, and time and space, which interact with each other. The holistic approach in a basin scale was then used in the Yellow River Basin and it suggested that 265.0 × 10 m of water, 45% of the total surface water resources, should be allocated to ecological systems, such as rivers, lakes, wetlands and cities, to sustain its function and health. The ecological water requirements of inside river systems and outside river systems were respectively 261.0 × 10 and 3.65 × 10 m.

BMP decision support system for evaluating stormwater management alternatives

Mow-Soung CHENG, Jenny X. ZHEN, Leslie SHOEMAKER,

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 4,   Pages 453-463 doi: 10.1007/s11783-009-0153-x

Abstract: Prince George’s County, Maryland, in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area has developed a best management practice decision support system (BMPDSS) to support analysis and decision making for stormwater management planning and design at both the site scale and the watershed levels. This paper presents a detailed description of the BMPDSS. A case study that demonstrates the application of the system is also included. The case study involves a Green Highway project located in a highly urbanized area within the Anacostia River watershed of the county. Several best management practices (BMP) such as bioretention, filter vegetative swale, porous paving, and landscape infiltration are proposed for reducing highway runoff and improving water quality. The BMPDSS is used to identify and evaluate various alternatives to determine the most cost-effective types and combinations of BMPs that minimize the highway runoff pollution.

Research on Evaluating the Efficiency of the Project Financing of the Energy Service Company

Bao-zhen Zhang,Han-ding Guo,Cai-xia Yang,Lei Wang

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2016, Volume 3, Issue 3,   Pages 252-257 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2016044

Abstract: The financing efficiency evaluation of the ESCO (Energy Service Company) is an important approach to improve the operation efficiency of existing building energy-saving projects. To scientifically and reasonably evaluate the financing efficiency of the ESCO, this paper puts forward a combination evaluation model based on the method set. Firstly, the method set is composed of different methods that meet the demand of statistical coherence, and KENALL-W coefficient test of concordance is used to check up the coherence of the ranking results of the different methods. Secondly, mean, Borda and Copeland are used separately for calculating the combination evaluation results and the circular combination method is used to ensure the coherence of evaluation results. Finally, the combination evaluation model is used to evaluate the 10 ESCO business project financing benefits, and the effectiveness of the models is verified accordingly.

Midline2 is overexpressed and a prognostic indicator in human breast cancer and promotes breast cancer

Lan Wang,Jueheng Wu,Jie Yuan,Xun Zhu,Hongmei Wu,Mengfeng Li

Frontiers of Medicine 2016, Volume 10, Issue 1,   Pages 41-51 doi: 10.1007/s11684-016-0429-z

Abstract:

Midline2 (MID2) is an ubiquitin-conjugating E2 enzyme linked to tumor progression and a novel interacting partner of breast cancer 1, early-onset (BRCA1). However, the role of MID2 in breast cancer remains unknown. This study investigated the expression, prognostic value, and role of MID2 in breast cancer. The expression of MID2 mRNA and protein was significantly upregulated in breast cancer tissue and established cell lines compared with that in normal breast epithelial cells and paired adjacent non-tumor tissue (P<0.001). Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that MID2 was overexpressed in 272 of 284 (95.8%) paraffin-embedded, archived breast cancer tissue. Moreover, MID2 expression increased with advanced clinical stage (P<0.001). High MID2 expression was significantly associated with advanced clinical stages and T, N, and M staging (all P<0.05). Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that high MID2 expression was an independent prognostic factor for poor overall survival in the entire cohort (93.73 vs. 172.1 months; P<0.001, log-rank test) and in subgroups with stages Tis+ I+ II and III+ IV. Furthermore, 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide colony formation, and anchorage-independent growth ability assays were conducted. Results showed that siRNA silencing of MID2 expression significantly reduced MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell proliferation in vitro and blocked the growth of MDA-MB-231 cell xenograft tumors in vivo (P<0.05). This study indicated that MID2 may be a novel prognostic marker and interventional target in breast cancer.
